About Project: The Lighthouse is a proposal for climate responsive, community-oriented building at Maim Beach. The project aims to maximise the engagement between the building, the landscape and the water. The arrangement of the buildings provides for maximising of the views of Broadwater. The building is composed of distinct roof lines, and balances between solid volume on the ground floor and contrasting lightweight semi-transparent volume on top creating a distinct landmark and illusion of lighthouse at night when lit up. Since the building is West facing to maximise the ocean views, it utilises various climate control strategies including narrow building volumes with openings for natural cross ventilation, double skin facades and operable vertical fins to provide comfortable thermal environment. The building’s program includes semi-sunken gallery / amphitheatre space, multipurpose function room, outdoor room, TIS Tyalgum club rooms, shop, reception, amenities, maker’s workshops, roof top bar, meeting and administration rooms and extensive boat storage amenity. The civic qualities that the proposal brings to the Main Beach include a bridge connection between the building and the adjacent park, formal plaza for commemoration ceremonies, informal plaza with landscaped berm for seating, saltwater pool area as well marina berths, car parking and super yacht pontoon.
